A-Z The Adventures of Katie Button - R

Continuing my A-Z series on The Adventures of Katie Button, my first romance/chicklit novel published through Crooked Cat. Taking a little break from the second draft of the sequel to explore a little bit more about Katie Button. Just the one letter today as there’s so much to write for R.

From the sequel, love this quote.

Red Communications

This is where all the troubles started for Katie. She loves her job but doesn’t set the world alight and goes unnoticed at Blackwell Creative, a mediocre branding company. But enter the Mastersons. Blackwell is taken over by Red owned by the Mastersons; brothers Jack and James and their father John Sr. At the same time, Katie starts having vivid dreams about James who she hasn’t had the pleasure of meeting until an awkward encounter in the boardroom. Red is the setting for a few office shenanigans, bitter quarrels, a bit of backstabbing and plenty of coffee. Just another day at the office; ‘reminded me of my days working alongside advertising execs!’ said a kind reader/reviewer.

Regression / Reincarnation
To try and make sense of the dreams, Katie undergoes regression. Through hypnosis, Katie revisits  past lives, discussing them with Peter who helps Katie make sense of the dreams and find the purpose of  them. The regressions are tough and emotional (brownies are a must afterwards) as they reveal painful truths, sometimes violent but always tragic.

The soul is reincarnated until it finishes its purpose on this Earth. I find this rather romantic as our souls have a destiny and do not rest until they meet their destiny, their soul mate on their journey- no matter how long it takes.

From a friend's wedding. Too cute

Receipts
The one thing that spoils a good shopping trip. The things that are left screwed up in the bottom of the bag. The things that remind Katie of the money she doesn’t have that she just spent on boots. But she really needs the boots. Honest.

Robbie Williams

Who doesn’t love Robbie!!!! (The exclamation marks are a giveaway that I actually love him). The clamour for tickets for one of his gigs is a pressurised, stressful few hours. But time well spent if successful (even if it is during work time). Katie doesn’t want to miss seeing Robbie at the O2 with her bestie, Alana. But there’s more to Robbie than a gig as Katie finds out . . .

The day I met Robbie Williams!!!!!! EEEKKKKK

Rogue
Back to the highwayman. The sexy, wicked rogue of Katie’s dreams. There’s also a rogue in the real world, in Katie’s life who is just as sexy. But rogues aren’t for keeps as Katie finds out.

Reviews
That nerve racking moment when a review comes in. The Adventures of Katie has 22 reviews now including 18 five stars!!! (Amazon UK) and three reviews over on Amazon US. I’m over the moon at the positive comments and love for Katie Button. I can’t emphasise how important reviews are for an Indie author (good ones lol). Whether it’s a paragraph or two words, your review means the world and is truly appreciated.

A-Z Katie Button Part Two

D-F

D

Ducks

Katie loves ducks. She loves their cute waddle and their togetherness. Feeding them in the park, Katie wishes she could find her duck. I can’t really say any more without giving away titbits other than the men in Katie’s life could learn a thing or two from the monogamous duck.

Dreams

I couldn’t do D without mentioning dreams. Gorgeous dreams where the same man appears whether he’s a dashing highwayman, a glorious gladiator or a Todor Lord with friends in very high places. The dreams are deliciously sexy and powerfully emotional; love, sex, betrayal and death all feature. No wonder Katie reaches for the chocolate brownies when she awakes.

Edwardian

One of the periods in history Katie visits in her dreams. The date is April 10th 1912 and she is at Southampton, waiting to board a White Star Line ship to a new life in America with James. As a domestic to James’ family, their relationship is secret and a new life across the ocean is the only way they can be together.

Fun! Funny! Fabulous!

Words used in some of the reviews from gorgeous readers of The Adventures of Katie Button. Words any author of Chicklit would love to hear regarding their character/heroine. These words also describe Katie, although ‘fabulous’ would be reserved for her purple boots.

The all important blurb

What happens when your dreams collide with reality?

Katie Button doesn’t believe in soul mates. When charismatic Jack Masterson asks her out on a date, despite him being her new boss alongside his more aloof brother, James, she agrees.

But her romantic dreams about a dashing highwayman, heroic gladiator and Tudor lord are becoming more frequent. And, worryingly, they feel real. She remembers every detail, every touch, every kiss. Until she realises the man in her dreams is James.

But Katie doesn’t even like James. And what about Jack, who is whisking her away for sexy mini breaks in the here and now?

Katie knows she needs to put an end to her dreams before they ruin her life. But how?
And a few cute words from a couple of reviewers

Where Inspiration Can Lead

Source
Last week, saw the release of my debut novel, The Adventures of Katie Button. It has been a busy week some of which included interviews. And one question kept cropping up; what was my inspiration for the novel? It all started with a piece of flash fiction about a highwayman which I wrote for Five Sentence Fiction. It was my very first short story and I had no idea how important those five sentence would be back then in March 2012. The prompt was ‘wicked’. And it turned out by the comments my piece received, a highwayman is the ultimate in wicked, with a mischievous glint in his eye. I really wanted to expand on that idea which I finally did in my modern day chick-lit (If you want to find out how the highwayman fits in, well you know what to do). :-)

But where did the inspiration come from to write the five sentences in the first place? It came from the narrative poem, The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes. I absolutely love this poem. Ghostly description takes the reader on a dark, spine tingling journey, where not a word is wasted as it chillingly teases you to the very end . . . which is what also makes a good flash fiction piece work.

I’m lucky enough to be working with this poem at the moment as it is one of the narrative poems studied in Year5. And it’s that time of year where we are immersing ourselves into The Highwayman as another generation are introduced to his tale. The enthusiasm in which they discuss, act out and predict is tangible and I can't wait to read their own narrative poems. Maybe The Highwayman will be a form of inspiration to a budding writer in the near future like it was with me.

Now, I have my own novel out, which seems to be doing well on Amazon and it’s all thanks to Alfred Noyes and The Highwayman.

DFQWBS Together

MirandaRebekah and Laura have come up with the best idea for a bridal shower EVER! A chance to write a short story based on The Proposal, The Wedding or The Honeymoon. I bet this is one present Kate and Will's didn't receive. But our fabulous bride and her Hubby Anna and Michael  are lucky enough to have the chance to enjoy all the romance, glitz and maybe the odd dark tale that is to be bestowed upon them from all us little writers in the  Dark Fairy Queen Writerly Bridal Shower - DFQWBS. Here is my offering. I have to say that I spent many a sleepless night trying to think of something magical and fairy tale-ish but it turned out an epic fail. Sorry.  One day I will venture into the land of goblins, witches and dragons -ooh exciting! But for now you have Kian and Gemma to tell a tale of a romantic wedding in a style I have never written in before. . . .

Title - Together
Author- Lizzie Koch
eBook- Yes

“It’s our wedding tomorrow” Kian whispers softly. He holds Gemma’s hand, stroking the smooth skin with his thumb.
“You’ll be waiting nervously, wondering whether I’m late or not turning up.  Mark gives you a pep talk. I bet you have a few beers beforehand too.”
“Of course.” There’s a pause as Kian glances out of the window.
“Tell me what your thoughts are when you see me.”
“I’m the luckiest guy alive as you walk, no glide towards me, grinning like crazy and stopping yourself from waving madly at your friends.” He chuckles. “And then you look at me and my nerves vanish.”
“And my heart quickens, the closer I get to you. I smell your aftershave. You look so gorgeous; I just want you all to myself. I tell you how much lilac does suit you even though you argued with me for months about the colour.”
“Not sure about the lilac but I’d marry you naked if it meant you’d be mine.” He grins cheekily.
“Not sure about the Vicar naked.” They share a stifled laugh.
“I’m not too fussed about the hymns, I just move my mouth.”
“Kian! You have to sing. It’s our wedding. It’s the law.” He looks at her wryly. “I sing and think about signing up for X factor.”
“You can’t sing” Kian reminds her after many assaults to his eardrums.
“Since when did that stop people signing up?”
“Good point.  You look lovely.” Gemma’s face creases with confusion. “Your wedding dress. It’s elegant, sophisticated and not a meringue in sight.”
“Thank you. I want to touch you. You smell delicious. I think the Vicar has been drinking though; it’s overpowering.”
“That’s me. I had a few beers, remember, panicking about the rings.”
“And then Mark steps forward with the rings. You say your lines perfectly. I can’t stop staring into your blue eyes as you say them” utters Gemma dreamily.
“I slip the ring onto your finger.” Kian slides his fingers tenderly along her wedding finger.
“You try to slip it on but my fingers are hot and swollen and you have to ram it on. I laugh and you smile and I melt again for the thousandth time.”
“Then it’s your turn and you fluff your words but you get my name right and the ring does slip on my finger, even over my knuckle.” He sounds smug but his smile is sincere but with flecks of pain.
“I keep hold of your hand, not wanting to let go, ever.”
“Like now.” They look at each other as Gemma’s grip is tight. “I just want to devour you Gemma.”
“Now or tomorrow?” She loves how he says her name and despite their location, she wishes she could be with him now.
“Both. I can’t wait to get you on your own after the ceremony, away from prying eyes. My wife; sounds strange but familiar.”
“Yes, but you've missed the best bit where the Vicar says what everyone waits for” Gemma teases.
“The only part we didn't need to practice.” He leans over and his lips meet hers, soft and gentle but Gemma is hungry for him, fuelled by passion; her hand running through his thick, blonde hair.” She doesn’t want to let go as it will bring her back to where she doesn’t want to be, not anymore. Kian gently pulls away from the most intense moment of his life. He sees panic in Gemma’s eyes.
“Shame we can’t become members of the Mile High Club.” He winks and Gemma’s tummy flips. She loves the wink.
“Do you think they’ll let us?”  Kian looks out of the window and grips Gemma’s hand.
“There’s no time. I love you Gemma and always will.”
“I love you” whimpers Gemma.

The air hostess shouts to brace for impact as Gemma and Kian crunch over their knees, hands held tight, life jackets on as the middle of the Indian Ocean looms at frightening speed.

“Look, my wedding dress” cries Gemma, wanting to reach it.
“You can’t Gemma. We didn't make it.” He’s still clutching her hand as they hover over the wreckage. “But we’ll be together for eternity; you and me, riding the stars.”
