Continuing my A-Z series on The Adventures of Katie Button, my first romance/chicklit novel published through Crooked Cat. Taking a little break from the second draft of the sequel to explore a little bit more about Katie Button. Just the one letter today as there’s so much to write for R.

Red Communications

This is where all the troubles started for Katie. She loves her job but doesn’t set the world alight and goes unnoticed at Blackwell Creative, a mediocre branding company. But enter the Mastersons. Blackwell is taken over by Red owned by the Mastersons; brothers Jack and James and their father John Sr. At the same time, Katie starts having vivid dreams about James who she hasn’t had the pleasure of meeting until an awkward encounter in the boardroom. Red is the setting for a few office shenanigans, bitter quarrels, a bit of backstabbing and plenty of coffee. Just another day at the office; ‘reminded me of my days working alongside advertising execs!’ said a kind reader/reviewer.

Regression / Reincarnation

To try and make sense of the dreams, Katie undergoes regression. Through hypnosis, Katie revisits  past lives, discussing them with Peter who helps Katie make sense of the dreams and find the purpose of  them. The regressions are tough and emotional (brownies are a must afterwards) as they reveal painful truths, sometimes violent but always tragic.

The soul is reincarnated until it finishes its purpose on this Earth. I find this rather romantic as our souls have a destiny and do not rest until they meet their destiny, their soul mate on their journey- no matter how long it takes.

The one thing that spoils a good shopping trip. The things that are left screwed up in the bottom of the bag. The things that remind Katie of the money she doesn’t have that she just spent on boots. But she really needs the boots. Honest.

Robbie Williams

Who doesn’t love Robbie!!!! (The exclamation marks are a giveaway that I actually love him). The clamour for tickets for one of his gigs is a pressurised, stressful few hours. But time well spent if successful (even if it is during work time). Katie doesn’t want to miss seeing Robbie at the O2 with her bestie, Alana. But there’s more to Robbie than a gig as Katie finds out . . .

Rogue

Back to the highwayman. The sexy, wicked rogue of Katie’s dreams. There’s also a rogue in the real world, in Katie’s life who is just as sexy. But rogues aren’t for keeps as Katie finds out.

Ducks

Katie loves ducks. She loves their cute waddle and their togetherness. Feeding them in the park, Katie wishes she could find her duck. I can’t really say any more without giving away titbits other than the men in Katie’s life could learn a thing or two from the monogamous duck.

Dreams

I couldn’t do D without mentioning dreams. Gorgeous dreams where the same man appears whether he’s a dashing highwayman, a glorious gladiator or a Todor Lord with friends in very high places. The dreams are deliciously sexy and powerfully emotional; love, sex, betrayal and death all feature. No wonder Katie reaches for the chocolate brownies when she awakes.

One of the periods in history Katie visits in her dreams. The date is April 10th 1912 and she is at Southampton, waiting to board a White Star Line ship to a new life in America with James. As a domestic to James’ family, their relationship is secret and a new life across the ocean is the only way they can be together.

Fun! Funny! Fabulous!

Where Inspiration Can Lead

Last week, saw the release of my debut novel, The Adventures of Katie Button. It has been a busy week some of which included interviews. And one question kept cropping up; what was my inspiration for the novel? It all started with a piece of flash fiction about a highwayman which I wrote for Five Sentence Fiction. It was my very first short story and I had no idea how important those five sentence would be back then in March 2012. The prompt was ‘wicked’. And it turned out by the comments my piece received, a highwayman is the ultimate in wicked, with a mischievous glint in his eye. I really wanted to expand on that idea which I finally did in my modern day chick-lit (If you want to find out how the highwayman fits in, well you know what to do). :-)

But where did the inspiration come from to write the five sentences in the first place? It came from the narrative poem, The Highwayman by Alfred Noyes. I absolutely love this poem. Ghostly description takes the reader on a dark, spine tingling journey, where not a word is wasted as it chillingly teases you to the very end . . . which is what also makes a good flash fiction piece work.

I’m lucky enough to be working with this poem at the moment as it is one of the narrative poems studied in Year5. And it’s that time of year where we are immersing ourselves into The Highwayman as another generation are introduced to his tale. The enthusiasm in which they discuss, act out and predict is tangible and I can't wait to read their own narrative poems. Maybe The Highwayman will be a form of inspiration to a budding writer in the near future like it was with me.

Now, I have my own novel out, which seems to be doing well on Amazon and it’s all thanks to Alfred Noyes and The Highwayman.
