Monday Mixer Treasure Seekers

The traipse of soldiers finally reached the river where they could rest. Although a long, tiring and challenging day, they were still at full complement which deserved some celebration especially with skirmishes from bandits along the way.
From across the river, snow capped mountains loomed, looking peaceful before the sun dipped behind the tallest jagged peak. Darkness cascaded upon them, leaving most with a feeling of penitence for what tomorrow would hold.
A thunderous roar ripped through the silence, sending half dazed soldiers scrambling for weapons in the thick, pitch of night, bristling with fear now that the bruits were true about what lurked in the mountains.
Sign up, be a soldier they said. See the world! Go on treasure seeking adventures! Well, that was all good and dandy until the roar of the mountains shattered every illusion that stealing dragon eggs was a good idea for a get rich quick scheme.
“Don’t worry, settle down lads,” the stupid, corpulent leader said as the roars died down. “There’s enough riches in those mountains for us all to retire on.”
“I predicate strongly a massacre,” Ronin whispered to himself as he tried to find sleep on his last night on earth.

Monday Mixer

Shoulders hunched, sighing deeply, Pim raised his tankard,  gulping down the vapid beer in hope it would wash away his dreadful day. Being called a fatuous little man by the Queen was unfair, rattling him to the bone. It wasn’t his fault the Queen had a sense of humour failure. Telling her was a step too far but he couldn’t help himself. As court jester, he accepted being the butt of everyone's jokes but he didn’t have to accept rudeness.
He felt his punishment, right across his fundament after an hour in the stocks where some cheeky ragamuffin whipped him so hard, he couldn’t sit down for a week.
Laughter rang through the inn and Pim clenched his teeth, roughly torquing his cordovan until it split at the seems and his meagre coins spilt over the bar. Without warning, large, grimy hands swooped, grabbing the coins, pushing Pim to the floor, crying out as he made contact with the flagstones. No one helped him as he struggled to his feet, shuffling for the exit, consumed with pain and embarrassment.
“Oi! Thief!” the gruff voice of the barman shouted.
For the second time that day, Pim found himself in the stocks.

Monday Mixer An Apple A day

Oh my gosh! That was a challenge and a half!!! I have never taken part in this challenge before but thought, with a bit of time on my hands, why not? Famous last words as it has taken me forever to come up with this little story, using certain selected words that Jeff Hollar over at The Latinum Vault for his Monday Mixer has come up with. So, armed with dictionary and thesaurus and fuelled with determination, I came up with this. All I'm saying is 'it's a start' and remember, a first attempt. So be kind, if not kind then constructive, if not constructive then say nothing and I will get the message and will put this down to an experience on a rainy afternoon. xxx

An Apple A Day

“One bite will cause a somnolent state Sire,” stated the witch, revealing the blood red apple in her long, bony fingers encasing it like a cage.
“Ah, magnificent! Now all the power and wealth will be mine!”
“You are an insular king; the worst kind, Sire,” she declared as she conjured a zephyr that lifted the apple to the King where it nestled in his lap next to his nougat.

“And you are insolent. We had an agreement Witch, unless you wish to burn?” She blenched.  Her kin had suffered the burning, hearing their excruciating screams even now. She knew once he had the apple, he wouldn't let her leave the castle which was why she sparged the apple with ancient magic where upon anything the apple touched, the spell would transfer causing the apple to become harmless. The witch smiled as the king selected a large piece of nougat.

And here is the list of words where you can select one from each and use in any tense as long as makes sense and the meaning hasn't changed. As you can see, I used two from one row. I don't think that classes me as an over- achiever lol. Maybe next time . . . did I say next time? Yeah right!.  xx

5 Sentence Fiction Fiction Words

Lauren stared at the page, trying to follow the story as her classmates read aloud but dreading her name being called next to read. She loved the words and the stories they created, taking her to wonderful lands where dragons roamed, witches caused trouble and a prince won the hand of a fair princess; but these were only words she could access as an audio through the beautiful tones of someone’s carefully chosen voice.
She loved the feel of a book but once opened was scared as the words danced a jig across the page, letters jumbling themselves up, making no sense at all. She wished the words would just stay still; long enough for her to be able to make some sense of them, read them, enjoy them and understand them without fear, ridicule or apprehension.
She turned over the page just as her classmates did, her eyes adjusting to the page as the words tumbled and jumbled again and again only for the class teacher to call her name for her turn to read aloud; words that wouldn't stop moving, words that roamed and teased, words that were unreadable to Lauren, words that were fated to remain forever a mystery, wrapped in an invisible blanket of anxiety.
